Uncle Jamie's Story

Every Squad needs a beginning. Ours is a grandfather named Uncle Jamie.

He has helped people all over the world, and here is the funny part: he got almost all of it wrong the first time. But Uncle Jamie did something clever with every mistake. He learned from it. He turned it into a rule that makes life better for children everywhere.

That is why the Squad exists. And it is why he will tell you, with a wink, that you do not have to be perfect to be a hero. You just have to care, try, fail, learn, and keep going.

A Life in Service

Straight out of school, Uncle Jamie joined the International Humanitarian Corps, full of dreams about seeing the world and helping people. He travelled across Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Caribbean, building field hospitals, carrying supplies, and helping doctors in the places that needed it most.

He was kind. He was brave. He was also wrong more often than he was right. Every mistake was well meant, every mistake hurt the people he loved to help, and every mistake taught him something true. Those lessons became the heart of the Squad.

Family

Behind every great founder is someone who saw the truth first. For Uncle Jamie, that someone is Auntie Ellie, his wife of more than forty-five years, his partner in every mission, and the one who turned his failures into the foundation of the Squad.

Co-Founder and Chief Strategist

Auntie Ellie (Eleanor Whitmore)

Married 45+ years

They met in a field hospital in South East Asia. Ellie was teaching children in a refugee camp. Jamie was delivering medical supplies. Over their first meal together she told him something he never forgot: "A bandage heals a wound, but education heals a life."

They fell in love talking late into the night about the children they had met and the futures those children deserved. They married at the base, with local children as flower girls and ring bearers, and spent their honeymoon visiting a school Ellie had helped to build.

The Four Failures

Uncle Jamie does not hide his mistakes. He frames them on the wall. Because these four failures became the four rules that built the whole Squad.

The Wrong Textbook

Uncle Jamie was so excited he could barely sleep. His first big job was bringing supplies to a village school in East Africa, and he packed it all: shiny new textbooks, bright posters of the planets, real microscopes.

Then the head teacher, Mr. Kamau, looked at the boxes and asked one quiet question: "Do you know what language our children speak?" The children spoke Swahili. Every book was in English. Not one child could read a single word.

The Unused Worksheet

In a town that had lived through hard times, Uncle Jamie built a Happiness Project. Therapy groups, art classes, healthy meals, all of it free and ready. He waited for everyone to come. Almost nobody did.

Auntie Ellie told him why, the way only Ellie can: "These families do not need a stranger telling them how to feel. You are treating them like they are broken." He had been so busy helping that he had forgotten to give people their dignity.

Lesson:
"Dignity, not prescriptions."

The Impractical Soap

After a great flood, Uncle Jamie built the grandest washing plan you ever saw. Sparkling handwashing stations. Soap-making lessons. Enormous, colourful murals about germs. Two weeks later, the stations stood empty.

A wise woman named Mrs. Begum told him the truth: "We are rebuilding our homes and caring for the sick. Your station is a long walk away. You have turned washing into one more hard chore." She was right. He had made it difficult, when it needed to be easy.

Lesson:
"Make it easy."

The Nightmare Drawing

This time, Uncle Jamie was certain he had it right. He built a safety plan for an island where great storms come, using every lesson he had ever learned. Then a girl named Maria came to him, crying.

"You are scaring us," she whispered. "All you talk about is danger. Now I am frightened all the time. I do not want to go outside. I do not want to play." He had taught children to be so careful that he had taught them to be afraid. And the world does not need frightened heroes.

Lesson:
"Hope, not fear."

The Turning Point

After 25 years, Uncle Jamie and Auntie Ellie came home to England. He took a quiet job and tried to rest. But a sad thought followed him everywhere: that he had spent his whole life letting down the very people he had tried to help.

One rainy afternoon he sat alone among boxes of broken toys and odd, mismatched books.

"I am rubbish at this," he muttered.

"Twenty-five years, and I still cannot get it right."

Auntie Ellie and Uncle Jamiecharacters in a cluttered attic talk about learning to help people and valuing experience as qualifications.

Then Ellie sat beside him and took his hand. "Jamie, you are looking at this all wrong. You did not fail those people. You learned with them. Those are not failures, love. Those are your qualifications."  And that very night, over a deck of Snap cards at the kitchen table, the two of them dreamed up the Scrubbing Squad.

"I failed so you could succeed. That's what heroes do."

FAMOUS LINES

Spend a day with Uncle Jamie and you will hear these again and again. He has a saying for every moment, a warm word for every wobble.
Learn them, and you will start to sound a little like a hero too.

"Ah, there you are! I've been hoping to see you!"

"Welcome, welcome! Come in, hero-in-training!"

"Shall I tell you a secret? Even heroes make mistakes."

"Oh, that didn't work? Excellent! Now we know exactly what NOT to do."

"The best heroes are the ones who fail, learn, and keep going."

"Good heavens, if I had a badge for every time I failed, I'd need a bigger uniform!"

"I failed so you could succeed. That's what heroes do."
