Nellie's Story

Nellie is the Sea Frontier vehicle, and Lobster Bob did not choose her name. He wants that on the record. He lobbied hard for La Tormenta. He argued his case clearly and, he believes, convincingly. Captain JT Peg looked at him for a long moment and said "Nellie." That was the end of the discussion.

She does not announce what she can do. She simply does it. She has crossed the Red Sea, navigated the Bermuda Triangle, and sat through a storm off the Galápagos that Lobster Bob still will not discuss. She did all of it without drama, without complaint, and without once asking his opinion. He finds this irritating. He also finds it, very quietly, impressive.

A Life in Service

Nellie spent fifteen years working out of Penzance in Cornwall as a crab boat, fishing the North Atlantic in conditions most vessels would consider grounds for staying in harbour. She belonged to a retired fisherman named Arthur, who had no family to leave her to and no wish to sell her to anyone who would not use her properly.

Captain JT Peg found her in the harbour in 2009. He spoke to Arthur for twenty minutes and bought her for a price Arthur considered fair. JT registered her as PZ 1953 N. PZ for Penzance. 1953 for the year Arthur first went to sea. The N is probably Nellie. Lobster Bob knows this. He refuses to confirm it. It is the only power he has left in the situation.

Connections

Nellie has two owners. One named her. One has never forgiven him for it.

JT navigates. JT schedules. JT names the boats. Lobster Bob takes the tours. This is the arrangement and it has not changed in fifteen years. Nellie is never quite where Lobster Bob expects her to be, because JT's schedule and Lobster Bob's schedule have never once been reconciled.

The Four Incidents

Nellie has never broken down. Her four defining moments are not failures of the vessel. They are confrontations she made impossible for Lobster Bob to avoid.

On Losing

The Name

Lobster Bob prepared a case for La Tormenta that he considered thorough, accurate, and correct. Captain JT Peg heard it in full, said "Nellie," and filed the registration.

The discussion was over before Lobster Bob understood it had ended. He has co-owned a boat called Nellie for fifteen years. He still insists he was right. He was possibly right. He lost anyway.

Lesson:
"Being right and winning are not the same thing. Know which one matters more."

On Trust

The storm that is not discussed

Off the Galápagos there was a storm of a scale and duration that beat every forecast Lobster Bob had read. He will say only that Nellie came through it, and that he came through it, and that he sat at the helm for a very long time in conditions that required everything he had and left no room for anything else.

What he understood during those hours he has never put into words. Nellie's steadiness through it is the reason he rates her as highly as he does.

Lesson:
"Trust what has earned trust. That is not the same as trusting everything."

On Fear

The myth

Lobster Bob crossed the Bermuda Triangle. He was not worried. Nellie was not worried. The sea was calm, the instruments worked, and they arrived on schedule.

He sat at the wheel waiting for something to happen. Nothing happened. He has told the story many times since, and the telling is the lesson.

Lesson:
"Know the difference between a real risk and a story about one. Both deserve attention. Only one can hurt you."

On Stillness

The extra forty-seven hours

Lobster Bob dropped anchor at a reef in the Red Sea, planning a four-hour stop. He had misread the conditions. The anchor held. Nellie sat still. The sea around her did not allow a safe departure for forty-seven hours. He was not in danger.

He was simply required to stay. He learned more about that reef, and about sitting still, than in ten years of scheduled stops. Nellie did not apologise. She never apologises for anything.

Lesson:
"The unplanned stop is sometimes the whole point of the journey."

The Turning Point

Fifteen years on, the arrangement is not simple and it has never needed to be. Lobster Bob uses Nellie for Sea tours. JT takes her when he needs her. She is never where Lobster Bob expects, and she has never once let him down on the water.

He has been heard talking to her when he thinks no one is listening. It is believed the name La Tormenta is used. Captain JT Peg is not told about this.

The lesson Nellie gave Lobster Bob is the one he hands to every hero: trust is earned in the conditions that should not be survivable, and the quietest partner in the room is often the one who has earned it most.

"She is everything I wanted in a boat. I wanted to call her La Tormenta. These two facts live together in me and they do not get along."

She sits perfectly at anchor in conditions that should move her, with no apparent effort.

She requires very little maintenance, which Captain JT Peg manages and Lobster Bob is quietly grateful for.

Settings

She makes no sound that could be read as a complaint or an opinion on the route.

Settings

She has crossed more bodies of water than any other vehicle in the fleet, always without incident.

Settings

She is never where Lobster Bob expects her, because Captain JT Peg decides where she goes.

Role In Lobster Bob's Scenic Tours

Nellie is the Sea Frontier vehicle. She carries Lobster Bob across oceans, reefs, channels, straits, and bodies of water that have no sensible name. She has navigated the Red Sea, the Bermuda Triangle, the waters around the Galápagos, and coastlines across five continents. She has never sunk.

She has never failed to start. She has never once asked Lobster Bob's opinion on the route. She is co-owned with Captain JT Peg. JT navigates. JT schedules. JT names the boats. Lobster Bob takes the tours. This is the arrangement. It has not changed.
