Meet Pvt. Bodger

Open the file. Everything from why he shouts to the day he learned not to.

Story

Sgt. Peck is the Squad's relentless engine of Elite Excellence. He was the very first recruit Uncle Jamie ever had, and he nearly broke the whole mission before it began. He was a highly decorated Special Forces trainer who believed discipline alone could solve anything. It could not. It took four spectacular failures, and one small child's drawing, to teach him otherwise. Today he is Chief of Training Missions, running Discovery Camp with all the precision he brought from the Special Forces, but pointed at something new.

Discovery Camp

The shortcut lesson

Pvt. Bodger was asked to set up a projector for a classroom session. The official equipment was unavailable. He built his own from components he found in a storage room, reasoning that a projector was just light going through a lens, and how complicated could it be.

The answer was: complicated enough to short-circuit the power to three classrooms and fill the corridor with harmless but very visible smoke. The children were fine. The lesson did not happen. The fire brigade came.

Lesson:
"A shortcut in preparation is a guaranteed detour in results."

The unstable swing

Pvt. Bodger built a swing set for the school playground using wood he found behind the maintenance shed and rope he found in his van. He was very proud of it. He installed it on a Tuesday.

On Wednesday morning the first child sat on it, it collapsed immediately, and the child landed on the grass completely unhurt but extremely surprised. He had built something that looked like a swing and functioned like a lesson in structural failure.

Lesson:
"Wellbeing is built on stability and trust. Never compromise on the quality of things that hold people up."

The improvised shower

The school shower head broke on a Monday morning before a sports day. Pvt. Bodger repaired it with duct tape and a garden hose connector from his van.

It held for four minutes before releasing a pressurised column of cold water across the changing room, soaking three children, a teacher, and all the sports day equipment. The duct tape was on the floor. Pvt. Bodger was also on the floor.

Lesson:
"A quick fix is never a clean fix. The right tool used correctly is always faster than the wrong tool used twice."

The boiler

The school boiler failed in January. Pvt. Bodger told the headteacher he could fix it. He had a wrench, a manual from a different boiler model, and considerable confidence. What followed were three separate small localised explosions over the course of one afternoon.

No one was hurt because the school had been evacuated after the first explosion. The boiler was condemned. A professional was called. The professional took forty minutes.

Lesson:
"Never improvise with gas, electricity, or anything that can end a Tuesday."

He arrives with his tool belt on, which always contains at least one wrong tool
for every job.

Settings

He makes a visible, correctable mistake within the first five minutes of every session.

Settings

He shouts "Oops!" with complete sincerity every single time.

Settings

He asks children to spot the danger before he acts, not after.

Settings

He thanks every child who corrects him as though they have done him a personal favour.

He ends every session with "What did Bodger do wrong today? Now, what is
the safe way?"

"Hello, hero! Pvt. Bodger here! Time for a quick fix!"

"Oops! My mistake is your lesson, hero. You got it right!"

"I'm here to show you what not to do. Lucky for you, I am very good at this."

"Before you act, stop and think: what would Bodger do? Then do the opposite."
