Meet Pvt. Nurse Nicky

Open the file. Everything from why he shouts to the day he learned not to.

Story

Sgt. Peck is the Squad's relentless engine of Elite Excellence. He was the very first recruit Uncle Jamie ever had, and he nearly broke the whole mission before it began. He was a highly decorated Special Forces trainer who believed discipline alone could solve anything. It could not. It took four spectacular failures, and one small child's drawing, to teach him otherwise. Today he is Chief of Training Missions, running Discovery Camp with all the precision he brought from the Special Forces, but pointed at something new.

Discovery Camp

The technical lesson

Pvt. Nurse Nicky was asked to run a health education session for a group of children at a rural school. She prepared thoroughly. Correct terminology. Accurate information. Comprehensive content. She delivered the session exactly as she had planned.

At the end, one child raised their hand and asked: "What does any of this mean?" Pvt. Nurse Nicky looked down at her notes and understood that she had taught a lesson she found perfectly clear to an audience that found it incomprehensible.

Lesson:
"Education must be practical, simple, and built for the person learning it, not the person teaching it."

Recharge Camp

The empty cup

Pvt. Nurse Nicky worked for eleven months without a day off in a remote community clinic, covering every shift, answering every call, turning nothing away. She was proud of her output. She was also running on exhaustion so deep it had started to feel normal.

She made a clinical error, small, caught quickly, no lasting harm, that she would never have made if she had been rested. She had been so committed to filling everyone else's cup that her own was completely empty.

Lesson:
"You cannot pour from an empty cup. Self-care is not optional. It is the foundation."

The recovery pen

As a veterinary assistant, Pvt. Nurse Nicky was meticulous about sterilising surgical instruments. She followed every protocol. Then a post-operative animal developed a minor infection that traced back, not to the instruments, but to the recovery pen, which had not been properly cleaned between patients.

She had been cleaning the things people checked and overlooking the things people assumed.

Lesson:
"Hygiene is a system, not a single action. The whole environment matters."

The unproven remedy

A sick animal in her care was not responding to standard treatment, and Pvt. Nurse Nicky was frightened. She found a reference to a herbal remedy in an old veterinary text and administered it without consulting anyone, reasoning that she was out of options.

The animal recovered, but not because of the remedy. A senior vet reviewed the case and showed her that she had bypassed every safety protocol the profession existed to protect. The desperation she had felt was real. The shortcut it had produced was dangerous.

Lesson:
"Slow, steady, and safe always wins. Desperation is not a clinical decision."

She tends the Squad's small camp garden before morning briefing, every single day.

Settings

She checks on the quieter heroes before a session ends, not the loudest ones.

Settings

She carries a well-stocked but compact field kit that she has edited down to only what is actually needed.

Settings

She uses farming and nature analogies for everything, including medical explanations.

Settings

She stops work at a fixed time, every day, without exception.

Settings

She ends every session with "How are you feeling right now? Not about the mission. About you."

Kia Ora! Pvt. Nurse Nicky here! Let's check your wellbeing!"

"Take a deep breath, hero. We will sort this out, eh?"

"You cannot pour from an empty cup. That goes for heroes too."

"The body is like a garden. What we put in is what we get out."

"The best medicine is prevention. Let's get ahead of this."

"Compassion is the foundation of wellbeing. Start with yourself."
