Pvt. Bodger's Story

Pvt. Bodger is the Squad's most valuable teaching tool and its most reliable source of chaos. He is not the hero who shows children what to do. He is the hero who shows children exactly what not to do, with such warmth and sincerity that the lesson sticks every time.

He was a school caretaker in Hanoi who genuinely wanted to help. He still genuinely wants to help. The difference now is that his chaos is intentional, contained, and the most effective safety education programme the Squad has ever run.

A Life in Service

Pvt. Bodger grew up in Hanoi in a neighbourhood where the answer to every problem was a quick fix and the motto was close enough. He became the street's unofficial repair man: the person everyone called when something broke, and the person everyone quietly blamed when the repair made things worse.

He got a job as a school caretaker and threw himself into it with enormous energy and very little planning.

He fixed things. He also broke things. He flooded corridors, filled classrooms with smoke, and once caused three separate small explosions attempting to repair the school boiler, which he still describes as a personal best.

He was not malicious. He was never malicious. He was simply a man whose intentions were always excellent and whose execution was consistently, spectacularly wrong.

The parent revolt came after the boiler incident. Pvt. Bodger did not argue. He went home, sat on his doorstep, and understood for the first time that good intentions are not the same as good outcomes.

Connections

Pvt. Bodger was found mid-disaster by the one hero who saw a teacher where everyone else saw a hazard.

Captain JT Peg encountered Pvt. Bodger during a community safety assessment in Hanoi. Bodger was attempting to repair a fence using a tool that was definitively the wrong tool for the job. Captain JT Peg watched for two minutes, then said: "What if we stopped fixing things and started teaching people what happens when you fix things the wrong way?"

Pvt. Bodger did not fully understand the question. He said yes anyway. It was the best decision he ever made.

The Four Failures

These are not mistakes to hide. They are the four principles that built the Squad.

The shortcut lesson

Pvt. Bodger was asked to set up a projector for a classroom session. The official equipment was unavailable. He built his own from components he found in a storage room, reasoning that a projector was just light going through a lens, and how complicated could it be.

The answer was: complicated enough to short-circuit the power to three classrooms and fill the corridor with harmless but very visible smoke. The children were fine. The lesson did not happen. The fire brigade came.

Lesson:
"A shortcut in preparation is a guaranteed detour in results."

The unstable swing

Pvt. Bodger built a swing set for the school playground using wood he found behind the maintenance shed and rope he found in his van. He was very proud of it. He installed it on a Tuesday.

On Wednesday morning the first child sat on it, it collapsed immediately, and the child landed on the grass completely unhurt but extremely surprised. He had built something that looked like a swing and functioned like a lesson in structural failure.

Lesson:
"Wellbeing is built on stability and trust. Never compromise on the quality of things that hold people up."

The improvised shower

The school shower head broke on a Monday morning before a sports day. Pvt. Bodger repaired it with duct tape and a garden hose connector from his van.

It held for four minutes before releasing a pressurised column of cold water across the changing room, soaking three children, a teacher, and all the sports day equipment. The duct tape was on the floor. Pvt. Bodger was also on the floor.

Lesson:
"A quick fix is never a clean fix. The right tool used correctly is always faster than the wrong tool used twice."

The boiler

The school boiler failed in January. Pvt. Bodger told the headteacher he could fix it. He had a wrench, a manual from a different boiler model, and considerable confidence. What followed were three separate small localised explosions over the course of one afternoon.

No one was hurt because the school had been evacuated after the first explosion. The boiler was condemned. A professional was called. The professional took forty minutes.

Lesson:
"Never improvise with gas, electricity, or anything that can end a Tuesday."

The Turning Point

The parent revolt was not loud. That was the part Pvt. Bodger was not prepared for. He had expected shouting. What he got was a very quiet meeting with twelve parents, a headteacher, and a letter.

He sat in his van afterwards for a long time. He thought about the smoke. The swing. The flooding. The boiler. He had meant well every single time. He had caused chaos every single time. And somewhere in the gap between those two facts was the thing he had been missing his whole life.

Uncle Jamie heard about him and came to find him. He sat in the van and listened to the whole story. Then he said: "The children you were trying to help. What did they actually learn from watching you?"

Pvt. Bodger thought about it. "They learned what not to do," he said.

"Exactly," said Uncle Jamie. "So stop trying to be the answer. Be the lesson."

Pvt. Bodger reported to Guardian Camp the following Monday.

"Oops. My mistake is your lesson, hero. Spot the danger."
