The Turning Point
Pvt. Pack had sold his guitar on a Wednesday and his tools on the Friday. He had two hundred dollars, a flat that cost more than that each week, and no clear idea what he was for.
He started at the community centre the following Monday because they needed someone to organise the equipment room and he needed somewhere to be. He was good at it immediately. He was also, for the first time in months, paying attention to things that were not about his own situation.
The go-bag came from watching a fire drill. He watched it and counted three children who could not engage with the standard evacuation procedure. One was overwhelmed by the alarm. One could not process the verbal instructions fast enough. One had a mobility need the kit had not accounted for. The existing bag had been packed for an average emergency by someone imagining an average child. He went home and started again.
