The Turning Point
Sgt. Rose's rock bottom was not a dramatic moment. It was a quiet one.
She was standing in her laundry room, surrounded by perfectly pressed uniforms, when she realised that not one of the children wearing them seemed any happier, or any braver, because of her work. The uniforms were perfect. The heroes were not thriving.
Uncle Jamie came to find her. He did not criticise. He simply asked: "Rose, what is the uniform for?"
She began to answer with something about standards and presentation. He waited. She stopped. She thought. And then, slowly, she said "It is so the child inside it feels ready. Feels worthy. Feels like a hero."
